What is an ECO CHURCH?

ECO CHURCH is a nationwide project which churches of all denominations are encouraged to join, to take practical action in expressing our caring for God’s earth.

Here in the Parish of Shere, we have two churches - St Mark’s in Peaslake, St James’ in Shere.

Both churches are currently BRONZE ECO CHURCH award holders, and we are working towards our next target of silver.

In the face of accelerating climate change and species loss, we need more than ever to take action to protect and care for nature today.

As an ECO CHURCH we are working to:

  • Reduce our carbon emissions,
  • Look after our churches and land in a sustainable and ecological way
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Support people and nature in parts of the world which are already badly affected by climate change
  • Encourage our congregation and community to think and act GREEN

5 key areas of ECO CHURCH

  • Worship and teaching
  • Management of church buildings
  • Management of church land
  • Community and global engagement
  • Lifestyle

Eco Church is an A Rocha UK project, run in partnership with Christian Aid, The Church of England, The Methodist Church, Tearfund, The United Reformed Church and Allchurches Trust Limited
